Digital Champions aim to help Council colleagues in Cardiff
Digital Communities Wales has been delivering training to employees of Cardiff Council, some of whom are Union Learning Reps and others who are simply looking to give their time to help others.
This approach has been designed to help members of the workforce that have little or no digital skills, which could help them should they require such skills in their current role or future jobs.
I recently attended a training session that was delivered to council staff by my colleague Hannah France. It was the second day of a two-day accredited Digital Champion training, which enables people to support others to do more online.
The main point of this particular session was ‘communication’, in terms of how you help someone whose confidence and knowledge of using computers and going online may be low.
The group looked at how they should be around someone when training them on a laptop or hand-held device, the supporting roles of a colleague and volunteer and how they should fully consider a learner’s situation whether that be home, work or personal.
The group agreed that the best approach was to be reassuring and empathetic when helping a colleague to get online, and that they would more than likely be learning with them as they are not necessarily tech experts themselves.
One important point that was made was that you can’t force people to go online, and you have to help them achieve a balance between the benefits of being online with their personal needs and interests.

With Cardiff Council’s digital inclusion strategy, it’s important that we support our colleagues that don’t have digital skills. The idea of being a digital champion, volunteering our time and skills, stemmed from there.
The training we’ve had from Digital Communities Wales has increased our confidence, to be able to go out and support learners. It’s not just about the skills, it’s about helping people with confidence online.”
