6th Merthyr Scout Group support community through Digital Heroes training

The 6th Merthyr Scout Group is based in the village of Troedyrhiw, three miles to the south of Merthyr Tydfil, and provides scouting for the central valley Wards of Plymouth & Merthyr Vale.

The hall used by 6th Merthyr Scouts is a scout owned building allowing activities to be performed on virtually any given day. This is especially true of weekend activities which typically involve staying in the hall.
In addition to scouting, the building provides space for other community groups, meetings / activities and training events.

The group has three sections – Beaver, Cub and Scout – and hosts the Districts Explorer and Network sections covering the age groups of six to twenty five.

Outline of our Intervention

6th Merthyr Scouts agreed to run a small Digital Heroes pilot in conjunction with Digital Communities Wales. The pilot was based on the Digital Heroes Toolkit developed as a result of work with Girl Guides in Cardiff.

The Scouts were interested in developing better engagement with the local community and the Digital Hero approach provided the perfect model for them. It also fitted in with some of the requirements of a number of existing Scouting Badges.

The pilot ran over three months and seven members of the Explorers section completed the task and were awarded with their Digital Heroes certificate.

Individual Impact

“My task was to teach my grandfather how to find and access a specific programme on the internet, and to find, update and save individual files on it.
It was really hard work working with my grandfather, however, with a lot of effort from both parties we eventually got there, I think! At the beginning even basic things, that I took for granted, he either didn’t know or found difficult to do. Also remembering what we had done from one computer session to another was almost an impossibility for him.”

Quotation mark

We have a long standing commitment to digital inclusion so were interested to take part in the Digital Heroes pilot. We were also keen on the intergenerational aspect of the project as it is a great way of engaging with relatives and community members.
