The Get Merthyr Online partnership has joined forces with Working Skills for Adults 2 to provide digital inclusion classes and support for people to learn how to use the Internet.

Impact

Cath Lloyd, 48, had ‘never even switched on a computer’ before she started with Working Skills for Adults 2. “We didn’t have them at my school and as an adult, I was a bit afraid of them,” she said.

Eighteen months later and Cath is now running her own mobile fruit and veg business, using spreadsheets and emails to make life much easier – all due to WSFA2.

Cath, who lives near the Neighbourhood Learning Centre in Gurnos, named her business Ted’s Fruit and Veg in memory of her grandfather. “It’s not just a van – it’s a community service,” she said.

Milena Wilawer, 30, came to the UK from Poland 10 years ago and went to WSFA2 with the aim of gaining qualifications and finding an office job. She has completed a business admin course and is now taking an IT course.

“It’s a great experience because not only is it helping me improve my skills, it’s also helping me to improve my knowledge of the English language,” she said.

Stephanie Davies said: “Our partnership with Working Skills for Adults 2 has been an extremely rewarding one in terms of the benefits to our learners. The organisations involved in the Get Merthyr Online partnership have been instrumental in driving the digital inclusion agenda forward in Merthyr Tydfil.”
