Gorwellion Newydd offers digital hub to people accessing its services
Gorwellion Newydd offers re-ablement programmes to adults with acquired disabilities and chronic illnesses. Services include group sessions to increase confidence and emotional well-being, develop positive personal and social relationships and support to adjust to changed life circumstances. People accessing its services can become members of the co-operative, adding their voice and control to direct Gorwellion Newydd’s activities.
The staff at Gorwellion Newydd wanted to expand their offering to the community and increase the group’s opportunities to create sustainability by adding a digital hub to their remit.
The group spoke with Gareth from Care to Co-operate, a project delivered by the Wales Co-operative Centre, who referred them to Linzi Jones, Digital Advisor for Flint & Wrexham for Digital Communities Wales.
Six staff & volunteers undertook a full day’s training course on supporting people to get online in November 2017, with another session pencilled in for January 2018. Linzi will be offering further support in the New Year to apply for funding for digital devices for the hub. This training will allow them to continue to support community members through the digital hub.
Gorwellion Newydd is now running a computer club for its members. The volunteers that run the computer club said that the training made a significant difference and has given them added confidence to be able to up-skill the participants that come along to the group.
In addition to the tools and resources that were shared during the training event itself, the direct support framework that the training has made available has been very useful and the periodic updates that have been shared via social media have been extremely valuable.
The volunteers enjoyed the training and learnt new skills and techniques that they can share with people attending the computer club. The feedback provided from course participants highlighted:
- Excellent range of techniques and resources
- The trainer was very informative. The information I learnt was amazing. I want to learn more.
- The training gave me more insight into apps and security
